The education of health professionals is the responsibility of the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH). In the period 1992–1996, an average of 272 physicians, 19 nurses, and 41 dentists were graduated each year. The education of auxiliary and mid-level technicians is the responsibility of educational establishments administered by the Division of Human Resources of the Ministry of Public Health. In 1990, several new categories of health workers were recognized: environmental health technician, teacher in public health, and nurse specialist in maternal and perinatal health.

UNAH Specialty Program

The specialty program in the various branches of the Health Sciences is an outstanding landmark of the National Autonomous University of Honduras. In 1975 he started the Graduate with distinguished medical professionals and support from the Social Security Institute, Ministry of Health, Medical College, being incorporated in 1984 at the National Autonomous University of Honduras.

From its inception until 2007, more than 1,200 physicians have graduated from postgraduate studies in 15 specialties, which corresponds to 80% of specialized medical resources of Honduras. This contingent of men and women with a high score represents the mainstay of the Honduran hospital complexes, not only in regard to medical specialty and preventive action but also to scientific research. Over the past five years have produced over 500 research pro-social and medical care, many of which have been published nationally and internationally.

Currently 190 students enrolled in the 15 specialties and offer their support graduate of care in hospitals in the Capital, taking more than 500 people a day, in different areas of focus.

Lac technology used in the Graduate with the support of several institutions nationally and internationally and this is how students are being introduced in genetic engineering, biotechnology, computer diagnostics, and others who enter the medical field and requiring all doctors to enrich their acerbic doctor and continue on a constant medical practice not to get back in time and space.

Medical Specialties driving to medical professionals who have a vocation of service, high human sensitivity, high sense of professional ethics and a commitment to ongoing training.

From 1978 to 2007 of the different Postgraduate Medicine has graduated more than 800 specialists, have been distributed throughout the country. During 2007, 190 resident physicians in different specialties involved in developing the teaching - learning through the methodology of learning - doing in Tegucigalpa, Hospital Escuela, San Felipe Hospital, National Chest Hospital Neuropsychiatric Mario Mendoza, CESAMO Crucitas, CESAMO Alonso Suazo and Social Security Institute.

The Graduate Medical develop the research component, making plans to investigate major health problems affecting the population of Honduras, reporting their results by two means: an Annual Meeting and Scientific Review "Graduate."

The outreach component is filled through direct medical care in different hospitals and campaigns aimed at specific problems and populations, such as those of Psychiatry, Ophthalmology and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

The Graduate Medical teachers have UNAH, with the support of a large number of specialists from the Ministry of Health and IHSS, implemented through a tripartite agreement between the UNAH, IHSS and the Ministry of Health.
